Subway Shorts

- Introduction -

Have you ever taken a ride on the big city subway? Tens of thousands of people sitting or standing, reading books, listening to music but mainly just ignoring the people around them. I’m a small town girl. I too ignore my fellow riders in the sense that I don’t usually initiate conversation. However, more often than not, specific riders will catch my attention and engage my interest.

Sometimes, it’s their clothes that spark my attention, other times their general look. It could be their reading material, the headphones in their ears, the way they are holding themselves or the company they keep. What ever reason, I become captivated. My mind will whirl with scenarios involving the person. I will make up a secret life for the person with out ever talking to them. I am not condoning, “judging a book by it’s cover”, but this is what happens.

Subway Shorts is an idea for a collection of shorts about the imagined lives of strangers, from the mind of a small town girl.
