Christmas or Grinchmas?

Is it just me or is everyone else in this same state of Christmas disappointment? You know, it’s that overwhelming sense that the Christmas season has become something it was never intended to be? Can anyone remember the last Christmas where there were no family squabbles, frustrated shopping or financial fear?

When I was little Christmas was such a great time. The entire family would get together starting on the 23rd at my aunts place. We’d watch Christmas movies, eat clementines and chocolate, play games and laugh until we couldn’t breath. Now that I’m older I’m witnessing this side of Christmas that tears my heart apart…it’s the selfishness! Everyone wants gifts, wants things on their schedule and according to their whims. There is no consideration anymore for others it’s simply turned in to a “what can I get from you” season.

Perhaps Christmas was always like this and I just never knew it. How incredibly sad that would be.

What would happen if there were no gifts at Christmas? What if everyone simply came together to be together? Would there still be reason to celebrate or would it all turn out the same?

Have we all forgotten the reason for the season? It is suppose to be about love in it’s simplest form, that is what baby Jesus represents. That is why it is called Christmas!!

More and more I am realizing that Christmas is dying. Despite the lovely music, the fun and heartwarming movies on tv, Christmas is dying because we can’t see passed our own Grinchy selfishness!

Is it sad that of all the movies on at this time of year, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “White Christmas”, the one I see as being the best representation of Christmas is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”? Sure, the movie has a happy ending but I don’t see many Who’s in the world today. If all of our gifts and food were stolen from us would we act in the joyous and loving manner the Who’s did in the movie? Would we gather together hand in hand and sing praises despite our circumstances? I’m not sure we would.
